Guide: How to withdraw your occupational pension

Planning ahead for how you want to withdraw your occupational pension from AMF is important. This guide explains the key things to consider, the choices available to you, and how to start your pension payments.

AMF provides only one part of your total pension – your occupational pension. At minpension.se, you can view your entire pension, including the state pension you receive from the government, occupational pensions from jobs you have held throughout your working life (which may be with several different providers), and any private pension savings.

You can also explore different retirement scenarios by adjusting the start dates and payment periods for the various parts of your pension.

Review the risk level of your occupational pension

As you approach retirement, it may be a good idea to review the level of risk in your occupational pension. On My Pages, you can see which type of pension plan you have. If you want to switch to a different plan, you need to do so no later than three months before your pension payments begin.

If you have a traditional insurance plan, you benefit from a secure and straightforward pension solution, where our investment managers handle the investments on your behalf. You are always guaranteed a minimum pension amount.

With a unit-linked insurance plan, there is no guaranteed pension amount. However, you have the opportunity to take a more active role and choose your preferred level of risk by selecting the funds in which your pension is invested. You can change funds whenever you wish.

You decide when payments from AMF should begin. However, it is important to be aware that your pension payments will start automatically at a certain age if you do not take any action—some pensions start automatically at age 65, while others start later. The age at which payments begin automatically depends on the type of occupational pension you have.

You can choose to start receiving your pension earlier or later if you wish. In that case, you need to notify us through My Pages between two and seven months before you want the payments to begin. On My Pages, you can also see the options available to you.

When can I start receiving my pension?

It is most common for an occupational pension to be paid out monthly for the rest of your life. This gives you a good idea of how much you can expect to receive from AMF each month throughout your retirement, which many people find reassuring. In most cases, however, you can choose a payout period other than lifelong payments.

If you would like to change the payout period, you need to notify us through My Pages between two and seven months before your pension payments are due to begin. On My Pages, you can also see the options available to you.

How long can I receive my pension?

With repayment cover, the money in your pension will be paid to your family if you die, but your own pension payments will be lower. As you approach retirement, it may therefore be a good idea to review your choice of refund protection. If your family would be financially secure without this protection, you may choose to opt out of it.

You can remove refund protection at any time. However, if you wish to add it, you need to apply for it well before your pension starts being paid out.

Your pension payments will start automatically at a certain age. If you would like to change when your pension starts or how long it will be paid out, you can easily log in to My Pages and register your choices. Be sure to do this between two and seven months before your scheduled pension payout date.

Here's how:

  • Log in and select the Forecast & Change Payout service under My Payments.
  • Specify when you would like your pension payments to begin and how long you want them to continue.
  • Enter your bank account number.
  • Sign using your electronic identification, such as BankID.
  • Done!

If you do not have an electronic ID, or if you are unable to log in for any other reason, please contact us and we will send you a paper form instead.

Keep in mind that....

  • If you would like to make any changes to your pension payout, you must notify us through My Pages no later than two months before your pension payments begin.
  • Once your pension payments have started, you can no longer change the retirement age or shorten the payout period.
  • Your pension payments will start even if we have not received your bank account details. In that case, the money will remain with AMF until we receive your account number.

You will receive a letter when it is time to make your choices

Five months before your pension is scheduled to start being paid automatically, you will receive a letter from us. The letter will tell you:

  • when your pension payments are planned to begin,
  • the estimated amount you are expected to receive, and
  • how long your pension will be paid out

You will also receive information about the deadline for notifying us if you wish to choose a different retirement age or payout period.

Pausa utbetalning och förlänga utbetalningstid

Det vanligaste är att du kan välja utbetalningstid livet ut eller under en tidsbestämd tid på 5–20 år, men det kan finnas andra val beroende på vilken pension du har.
